• Gas Hot Water Systems
If your Rinnai hot water unit isn’t producing hot water, there are a few simple checks you can perform before calling a technician. Your unit requires three essentials to operate: Power, Water, and Gas. Download guide or follow the below steps to identify potential issues.
POWER
- Check the Power Source: Ensure your hot water unit is plugged into its own power point. Unplug it and test another appliance (like a phone charger or desk lamp) to confirm the power point is working.
- Reset the Unit: Leave your hot water unit unplugged for a few minutes to clear any potential error lockouts.
– Refer to Owner Manual for error codes and suggested solutions. - Contact an Electrician: If the power point isn’t working, reach out to an electrician for assistance.
GAS
- Check Gas Valves: Ensure the gas valves to your meter and hot water unit are turned on.
– Any other gas-related issues should be handled by a qualified gas plumber.
WATER
- Minimum Flow Rate: Most hot water units require a minimum water flow of about 2.5 liters per minute to operate. If the
flow is below this, the unit may not turn on. - Check the Inlet Strainer: A blocked strainer can restrict water flow. Follow this video for instructions on checking your strainer on your hot water unit.
– Note: If your hot water unit is part of a gas-boosted solar hot water system, skip this step to avoid scalding risks. Only qualified technicians should check the strainer in such systems. - Inspect Fixtures: Blocked aerators or shower heads can significantly reduce water flow. If you notice that hot
water is functioning at one fixture but running cold at another, this often indicates a blockage. - Testing for Blockages: Run Two Hot Water Taps simultaneously. If both fixtures start to run hot, it confirms a
blockage in one of the fixtures.
– Contact a Plumber: If a blockage is confirmed, reach out to a plumber to clean the affected fixtures. - Check for Cross Connections: Turn off the cold-water valve on the hot water unit (located on the middle pipe). If cold
water runs from a hot tap when isolated, there’s a cross connection.
– Contact a Plumber to investigate.
Heating
• Gas Flued (Space) Heaters

- Check the Gas Connection: Inspect the hose and bayonet (connection point) fitting for kinks or damage that could block the gas supply.
- Check Gas Valves: Ensure the gas valves to your meter and heating unit are turned on. Any other gas-related issues should be handled by a qualified gas plumber.
- Clean Filters: Check and clean the unit’s filters, as they can accumulate dust and block airflow
- Check Controls: Check user manual for a list of error codes and possible solutions.

• Electric Panel Heaters

- Check the Power Source: Ensure your hot water unit is plugged into its own power point. Unplug it and test another appliance (like a phone charger or desk lamp) to confirm the power point is working.
- Check the Thermostat: Ensure the thermostat is turned up. If not, turn up thermostate.
- Check Timer: Has the timer been set to turn on at a specific time. If so, reset timer and see it this fixes the issue.
• Gas Portable Heaters

- Check the Gas Connection: Inspect the hose and bayonet (connection point) fitting for kinks or damage that could block the gas supply.
- Clean Filters: Check and clean the unit’s filters, as they can accumulate dust and block airflow.
- Ensure Adequate Ventilation: Make sure the room is well-ventilated with a door or window open, as a faulty heater can produce carbon monoxide.
Air Conditioning
- Check the Thermostat: Confirm the thermostat is set to the correct mode (“cool”) and temperature, and replace the batteries if it’s a battery-operated model.
- Check the Power Source: Verify the circuit breaker for your Air Conditoner unit hasn’t tripped; if it has, reset it.
- Check Air Filters: A dirty or clogged air filter restricts airflow, which can prevent your system from cooling effectively. Clean or replace it.
- Check Vents and Returns: Make sure furniture, curtains, or other items are not blocking the supply and return air vents.
- Check Error Codes / Checklists: Refer to Owner Manual for error codes if applicable and checklists for suggested solutions.
