Energysaver / Gas Flued Space >
-
My Energysaver / Gas Flued Space heater is not working as well as it used to – what can I do? >Although some warmth comes from Radiant heating (transfer of heat energy through electromagnetic waves), most of the heat from your Energysaver / Gas Flued Space heater is delivered by moving air through the unit and blowing it into the room. If your heater’s performance has dropped, the most common cause is dust and debris blocking airflow.
Why this matters- A dirty heater can significantly reduce heating capacity.
- Blocked airflow can cause the heater to overheat or shut down.
- Excessive dust buildup can even pose a fire risk.
What to do
To restore performance and ensure safety, it’s recommended to have your heater professionally serviced by a licensed gas fitter.
Regular servicing helps keep your heater running efficiently and safely.

Portable Gas >
-
My Portable Gas heater is producing a smell / odor, what can I do? >If you notice an unusual smell while your Rinnai Portable Gas heater is operating, it may not be a fault with the heater itself. Certain household activities can affect the air quality and cause odours when the heater is in use.
Common contributors include:
- Freshly painted surfaces
- Use of glues, solvents, or cleaning products
- Aerosols like hairspray or air fresheners
- Burning candles or incense
These substances can release chemicals into the air. When drawn into the heater’s combustion process, their chemical composition changes – often resulting in a smell that’s quite different from the original source. For example, water-based paint may produce a kerosene-like odour when the heater is running.
WHAT CAN I DO
- Check your environment
– Look around for any recent activities or products that might be contributing to the smell. If possible, remove or ventilate the source.
– Ventilate the area. Position the heater near fresh air (e.g., open windows or doors) and run it on the maximum heat setting for 1–2 hours. This can help burn off residual odours. This ‘burning off’ procedure should remove the odours and providing that the cause has been removed there should be no more “smells” produced.
–
IMPORTANT: The environment may be unpleasant during this process, so ensure good ventilation. - Service your heater
– If the smell persists or you’re unsure, it may be time for a service. Rinnai recommends servicing your gas appliances every two years by a licenced gasfitter to ensure safe and efficient operation.
-
My Portable Gas heater keeps heating even after reaching the set temperature – what should I do? >Rinnai Portable Gas heaters don’t completely switch off; instead, they reduce their heat output once the set temperature is reached. In mild weather or small rooms, this low heat output may still cause the room temperature to rise slightly above the set point. This is normal and not a fault with the heater.
COMMON CAUSES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Room size and heater capacity
– Models like the Avenger 25, Dynamo 15, and Enduro 13 rely on room size and ventilation being within specification.
– If the heater is too large for the room, it may overshoot the set temperature.
– Example: The Avenger 25 requires a room volume of 62.5 m2 or larger.
2. Ventilation
– Ensure there is adequate fresh air circulating in the room.
– Poor ventilation can affect temperature sensing and air quality.
– You may need to experiment with different levels of fresh air to achieve stable operation.
3. Heater operation
– Whilst operating on thermostat control, these heaters never fully turn off – they reduce heat output to a low level.
– In mild weather, even low-level heating may continue to raise the room temperature above the set point.

Outdoor Radiant >
-
My Outdoor heater is not turning on, what can I do? >If your Outdoor heater isn’t turning on there are a number of things you can try before making a service call. Follow the below steps:
- Check the power supply: Ensure the heater is plugged in and receiving power. If hardwired, confirm the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.
- Confirm the heater is in standby mode: When first powered on, the heater enters standby mode. It won’t begin heating until activated via the remote control.
- Use the remote control: Press the power button on the remote to turn the heater on. Make sure the remote has working batteries and is within range.
- Inspect for obstructions or damage: Look for any visible damage, debris, or insect nests that may be affecting operation.
- Reset the unit: Turn off the power at the isolator or circuit breaker, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on and try again.
If the heater still doesn’t respond, refer to the owner / operations manual or contact Rinnai Customer Service for further assistance. -
Why is my Outdoor heater not producing enough warmth? >There are several factors that can affect heating performance:
- Extreme ambient conditions: High winds or very cold temperatures can reduce the effectiveness of radiant heating, especially in open outdoor areas.
- Incorrect installation height or angle: If the heater is mounted too high or not angled correctly, the radiant energy may not reach the intended area effectively.
- Undersized unit: The heater may be too small for the space it’s intended to heat. Refer to the sizing guide in the installation manual to ensure the unit matches the area requirements.
For optimal performance, ensure the heater is installed according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and consider using multiple units for larger or more exposed areas.
If you think you are still not getting the right amount of heat from your system contact your installer or Rinnai Customer Service for further assistance. -
My Outdoor heater smells when turned on after periods of non-use – is this normal? >A slight smell when turning on the Heater after a long period of inactivity is usually due to a build-up of dust, debris, or insects on the heating element or casing. This material burns off when the heater is activated, causing the odour.
To prevent this:
- Switch off the heater and allow it to cool completely.
- Clean the unit with a soft, dry cloth — especially around the heating element and vents.
- Avoid using water or cleaning sprays directly on the unit.
Regular maintenance helps keep your heater operating safely and efficiently.

Electric Panel >
-
How do Electric Panel heaters heat the room? >The heater uses electricity as the heating medium. It operates on the ‘natural convection’ principle where air from the room is drawn into the ‘air inlet’ louvres at the base of the appliance, is heated inside the appliance and expelled through the ‘air outlet’ louvres at the top of the appliance without the use of fans. A sophisticated thermostatic system keeps the room close to the selected temperature.
-
Does the surface of the Electric Panel heater get hot? >Yes, the surface of an electric heater can become warm to moderately hot during operation, especially around the air outlet or heating element area.
If the surface feels excessively hot or shows signs of discoloration, unplug the unit immediately and contact Rinnai Customer Service.
These temperatures are generally safe and expected, but always follow the product’s safety guidelines and keep combustible materials clear of the unit. -
Can I control the Electric Panel heater with Wi-Fi? >
Yes, some Rinnai Electric Panel heaters do support Wi-Fi control – specifically models in the BEPH Series and the FEPH Series.
These models are Wi-Fi enabled and can be controlled via the Tuya Smart App, allowing you to:
- Adjust temperature and modes remotely.
- Set timers and schedules.
- Use voice control with Google Home or Amazon Alexa.

What is the energy star rating of the Electric Panel heater? >The Rinnai Electric Panel heaters do not have a traditional star rating like gas appliances or air conditioners.
Electric heaters in Australia are generally not covered by the energy star rating system, as their efficiency is close to 100% by nature – almost all the electricity they consume is converted into heat. -
My Electric Panel heater makes a popping noise when heating up and cooling down, is this normal? >Yes, a popping or clicking noise during heating and cooling cycles is normal. This sound comes from the metal casing and internal components expanding as they heat up and contracting as they cool down.
These noises are typical of electric heaters and in most cases do not indicate a fault or safety issue.

Outdoor Radiant >
-
What is Radiant heating and how does it work? >Rinnai Outdoor Radiant heaters use infrared energy to directly warm people and surfaces, rather than heating the air. This makes them highly effective in open or breezy outdoor environments, where traditional heaters lose heat quickly.
Infrared energy is a type of electromagnetic radiation just beyond the visible spectrum — we can’t see it, but we feel it as heat. It’s the same type of warmth we experience from the sun.
Radiant heat is widely regarded as the most comfortable, healthiest, and most natural form of outdoor heating. Like sunlight, radiant energy travels in straight lines, warming people and objects in its path. These warmed surfaces then act as mini heat convectors, gently radiating warmth back into the space.
This direct heating method ensures efficient warmth without relying on air movement, making it ideal for outdoor settings. -
What size Outdoor Radiant heater do I need? >Selecting the right Rinnai Electric Outdoor Radiant heater depends on the size of your outdoor space and how protected it is from wind and weather. Because Radiant heaters warm people and surfaces directly (not the air), open or exposed areas will need more heating power than enclosed spaces.
Use the guide below to estimate the total heat output (in kilowatts) required for your area.
Area Size (m²) Fully Enclosed (Patio with walls & roof) ~100 W/m² Semi-Enclosed (Covered deck, some wind protection) ~150 W/m² Open Area (Pergola / Exposed patio) ~200–250 W/m² Up to 10 m² 1.0 kW 1.5 kW 2.0–2.5 kW 10–15 m² 1.5 kW 2.0–2.5 kW 3.0–4.0 kW 15–20 m² 2.0 kW 3.0 kW 4.0–5.0 kW 20–30 m² 2.5–3.0 kW 3.5–4.5 kW 5.0–6.0 kW -
Can I operate multiple Outdoor Radiant heaters with one remote? >Yes, one remote can operate multiple Rinnai Outdoor Radiant heaters. This allows for convenient control of several units within the same area, provided they are within range and paired correctly. Refer to the operation manual for pairing instructions and remote range specifications.
-
Are the Outdoor Radiant heaters Wi-Fi compatible? >Yes, Rinnai Outdoor Radiant heater (ORHxxWF) models come with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. Using the Tuya Smart App you can operate these heaters remotely via your smartphone or tablet.

Can I control the temperature of my Outdoor Radiant heater? >Yes, the current range of Rinnai Outdoor Radiant heaters allows you to control the heat output. You can select from three power levels:
- 33%
- 66%
- 100% of the rated power
This gives you flexibility to adjust warmth based on your comfort and weather conditions.
However, please note that these heaters cannot be thermostatically controlled – they do not automatically adjust based on ambient temperature. -
Can I turn multiple Outdoor Radiant heaters on and off with an independent isolator switch? >No, Rinnai Outdoor Radiant heaters cannot be operated via an isolator switch alone. When power is first supplied to the heater, it enters ‘standby’ mode. To activate the heater, you must use the remote control. The isolator switch only controls power supply, not heater operation.
-
Can I use my Outdoor Radiant heater in enclosed spaces? >Yes, Rinnai Outdoor Radiant heaters can be used in enclosed or semi-enclosed areas, as long as the installation complies with the clearance and ventilation requirements outlined in the installation manual.
These heaters are designed for use in open alfresco environments or large indoor areas with high ceilings.
Always refer to the installation manual to confirm that your chosen location meets the necessary safety and performance criteria. -
Are the Outdoor Radiant heaters weatherproof? >Yes, Rinnai Outdoor Radiant heaters are weatherproof and designed to withstand Australian outdoor conditions. They feature a high IP65 rating, which means they are protected against dust and low-pressure water jets from any direction.
This makes them suitable for installation in covered outdoor areas, patios, balconies, and semi-exposed environments. However, for optimal performance and longevity, it’s recommended to install them in areas with some protection from direct rain and extreme weather.
