Replacing an ageing boiler system with a high-efficiency Rinnai solution delivers reliable hot water for critical bottling and sanitation operations.
Background
Treasury Wine Estates is one of the world’s largest wine companies. Spanning more than five hectares and 59,000sqm of buildings, its Nuriootpa site in the Barossa Valley has the capacity to produce more than 100 million litres of wine annually, making it the largest premium wine bottling facility in the Southern Hemisphere.
Hot water plays a critical role in its operations. From cleaning and sanitising tanks and equipment to washing barrels and bottles, a dependable supply at the correct temperature underpins hygiene, product quality and the efficiency of its bottling lines.
Challenge
The site’s ageing boiler system was becoming increasingly unreliable and required constant maintenance. With hot water integral to plant operations, the risk of equipment failure or prolonged shutdown was significant.
A replacement system needed to accommodate the plant’s high hot water demand and match the kilowatt output of the existing boiler. Delivery deadlines were also tight, with the changeover required to take place without interrupting production.

Solution
The old boiler system was replaced with ten Rinnai HDC32i Heavy Duty Continuous Flow Water Heaters integrated into a single system through a Rinnai Manifold Pack. Each HDC32i unit provides 56kW of output, giving the combined system the capacity required to meet the plant’s temperature and flow-rate demands.
The new equipment was positioned in a building adjacent to the existing boiler room. This allowed the Rinnai system to be installed and prepared while the original boiler remained operational. The plant’s hot water supply could then be switched over without production downtime.
Designed for demanding commercial and industrial applications, the HDC32i is particularly well suited to factory installations and high-temperature washdown. Dual stainless-steel heat exchangers deliver thermal efficiency of up to 97%, while low pressure loss enables consistent performance across a high-demand system. Water temperatures of up to 85°C can be accommodated where required.
Rinnai’s Intelligent Management System* activates only the number of heaters needed to meet demand at any given time, avoiding unnecessary gas consumption during periods of lower usage. Smart sequencing distributes operating hours evenly across the units, while individual heaters can be serviced independently, improving reliability and helping safeguard hot water availability during maintenance.
By replacing an ageing boiler with a high-efficiency modular Rinnai solution, Treasury Wine Estates in Nuriootpa achieved reliable, scalable hot water performance with improved energy efficiency, reduced maintenance requirements and uninterrupted production.
