Gatton Prison is a state-of-the-art men's correctional facility in Gatton, Queensland, completed in August 2025.
Background
Designed with multiple security classifications, including a super maximum-security section, the facility required a robust hot water system capable of delivering reliable performance, high efficiency and long-term operational cost savings.
Challenge
The project's strict security protocols and controlled site access created unique installation challenges. In addition, the hot water plant was required to be located internally, meaning the system needed to operate without relying on traditional plant room ventilation. The solution also needed to provide sufficient capacity, reliability and ease of installation while complying with the facility's stringent operational requirements.
Solution
Rinnai specified two Demand Duo 6 packages, installed back-to-back with additional storage tanks and coaxial flues, delivering a space saving solution with high hot water output and the ongoing recovery needed to meet the facility's demand. Using individual coaxial flues allowed the heaters to operate as room sealed appliances, eliminating the need for plant room ventilation entirely and meeting the brief's internal plant room requirement.
Outcome
The modular nature of the Demand Duo packages also simplified delivery, allowing the units to be easily transported to their final location within the secure site and assembled on site with minimal disruption. The result was a solution that delivered energy efficiency and reduced running costs through the HD210's high efficiency condensing technology. The solution also provided improved reliability, increased capacity, space savings and ease of installation, all while meeting the strict access and security requirements of a correctional facility build.
By combining two Demand Duo 6 systems with additional storage and room-sealed coaxial flues, Rinnai delivered a high-capacity, energy-efficient hot water solution that met the prison's stringent security requirements while providing reliable performance, reduced operating costs and long-term flexibility.
